IOSONO and Fraunhofer IDMT

Founded in 1949, the Fraunhofer Society is the largest organization for applied research in Europe. A leading provider of contract research for industry and the public sector, the Fraunhofer Society comprises more than 50 institutes with a total annual budget of approximately 1.4 billion euros. The majority of the 15,000 staff are scientists and engineers.

advanced research in audio technology

Among the most notable achievements of the Fraunhofer Society is the MP3 digital audio encoding format, developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS. The Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT, founded in 2004 as an offshoot of Fraunhofer IIS, conducts applied research and develops new technologies in the fields of acoustics, multimedia metadata, children's media and bio-inspired computing, as well as for the distribution of virtual goods. Current projects include software for the analysis and characterization of multimedia content, audio-visual applications for medical engineering, and IOSONO’s wave field synthesis technology.

Karlheinz Brandenburg

The Director of Fraunhofer IDMT, Karlheinz Brandenburg, gained international recognition as one of the inventors of the MP3 format. Professor Brandenburg is a fellow of the IEEE as well as a governor and fellow of the Audio Engineering Society. To date, Brandenburg has been granted over 100 patents, and he has received a number of academic and industry awards including the AES Silver Medal Award (1998) and the IEEE Engineering Excellence Award (2000).

Under Professor Brandenburg’s leadership, Fraunhofer IDMT built on previous research into wave field synthesis and brought the technology to commercial maturity. Fraunhofer IDMT continues to serve as IOSONO’s most important strategic partner.
