IOSONO Spatial Audio Workstation (SAW)

The IOSONO Spatial Audio Workstation (SAW) is a powerful object-based authoring Plug-in that allows the user to create complex sound scenes. IOSONO allows for future-proof mastering of auditory scene data for an immersive audio experience without the limitations of specific reproduction systems or speaker setups. The first of its kind, IOSONO Spatial Audio Workstation will revolutionize the audio distribution industry.

IOSONO Spatial Audio Workstation can be purchased now in our IOSONO Online Shop.

Features

  • Powerful object-based authoring tool
  • Smooth integration into Steinberg’s audio and postproduction system Nuendo
  • Full control over audio objects, motion paths and their parameters
  • Object parameters can be automated in real-time
  • Novel options for motion editing, e.g. moving, rotating, scaling and grouping
  • User friendly graphical interface
  • Integration of hardware controller (i.e. joystick) is possible

Moreover, the Spatial Audio Workstation offers a wide range of functionality for audio objects and motion paths, e.g. moving, rotating, scaling and grouping.

A motion path can be drawn freely by using real-time automation or can be constructed by creating keyframes; a circular motion can easily be generated by using the angle and radius slider.

In addition, users can modify every motion path by dragging its spline control points to the desired position within the Spatial Audio Workstation window.

Export of Digital Cinema Package compliant format

Easy to integrate into the workflow

The Spatial Audio Workstation is designed for smooth integration into Nuendo, Steinberg’s advanced audio and post-production digital audio workstation. It provides the sound designer and mixer with the proper tool to create a more intense and immersive sound experience without the limitations imposed by specific reproduction systems.

The mixer can automate all object parameters in real time, which are then sent as a set of metadata to the internal or external rendering. The internal rendering creates standard multichannel formats and the external rendering uses the IOSONO algorithm to support arbitrary speaker setups i.e. Wave Field Synthesis.

Object-based sound mixing

During the mixing process, the mixer is able to arrange separate sound sources into a sound scene on the stage view of the Spatial Audio Workstation window. Audio events appear on stage view as selectable sound objects for dedicated Nuendo tracks.

The mixer can create spatial sound scenes by using a variety of automation features as well as the new editing functions of the Spatial Audio Workstation. Thus, the user has full control over audio objects and motion paths.

Spatial mixing for all standard multichannel formats

The Spatial Audio Workstation as an object-based audio post-production tool enables content creation independent from the reproduction setup. Once a scene is generated, it can then be rendered into all standard multichannel formats or even stereo mixes. In that case, the rendering is performed in real-time directly in the Spatial Audio Workstation.

This is what gives Spatial Audio Workstation its future-proof mastering capability because any future format can be rendered directly out of the object-based scene description without up-mixing. All object-based scene descriptions produced by the Spatial Audio Workstation are high-definition (HD) spatial masters.

Applications

The seamless integration of the Spatial Audio Workstation Plug-in for Nuendo into any audio/media production workflow makes it a powerful tool for audio post-production, digital cinema sound, 3D audio (i.e. complementing 3D picture) and media production.

System requirements

  • Operating System:
Windows XP Professional SP2, Windows 7
  • Host application:
Steinberg`s Nuendo 4.3/32 Bit (Nuendo dongle required)
  • Processor:
    Dual Core 2.4 Ghz
  • Graphic board:
    Open-GL support recommended
  • Sound card:
6 Output Channels or more recommended
  • Display:
Resolution 1280 x 1024 Px, Dual Display recommended

User Interface

The Spatial Audio Workstation’s user interface allows users
to easily position and move sound objects. Usually, the user
interface is displayed on a second monitor to the right of the
Nuendo monitor.

The Plug-in interface is divided into three sections:

1. Stage View:

  • Central component of the Spatial Audio Workstation window
  • Shows an overview of the entire sound scene
including the stage, sound objects and motion paths
  • Allows for easy editing of the sound objects

2. Object Inspector:

  • Allows user easy access to all sound objects
    used in the scene
  • Provides a hierarchical view of the entire scene
where sources and groups can be organized into layers
  • Gives overview and editing options of the status of
    the sound objects, e.g. solo, mute,automation read/write

3. Object Editor:

  • Displays all changeable object parameters
of the currently selected object e.g. source
type, object position, LFE (Low Frequency
    Effects), rotation and scale.
